REVIVE! Training Sessions Save Lives

Recognizing the signs of an opioid overdose and knowing how to react quickly can be critical in saving a life. It's not always apparent whether someone nearby is at risk, and overdoses can happen unexpectedly in homes, work or in public.

Recently, a Prince William County resident demonstrated swift action after discovering her grandson was experiencing an opioid overdose. The grandmother immediately called 911 for help and administered Naloxone, also known as Narcan, an FDA-approved opioid reversal medication.

The grandmother's ability to identify the overdose symptoms and administer Naloxone stemmed from her participation in the REVIVE! training program offered by Prince William County Community Services and its collaborative partners. REVIVE! is the Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education program for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

"Had it not been for Narcan and the training I received, my grandson would not have made it," the grandmother said. "Education about drugs is so very important today, because drugs are everywhere, and you can save a life - like I did."

After receiving Naloxone, the grandson's breathing improved, and he was taken to the hospital for further treatment. According to the medical professionals involved in the patient's treatment, the grandmother's immediate response of administering Naloxone nasal spray and calling for help probably saved her grandson's life.

"The grandmother's story reminds us that, as family, friends, and community members, we each play a vital role in preventing overdoses," said Wellness and Prevention Supervisor Wendy Hunt. "It is important for each of us to take this free, short training to learn how to prevent an opioid overdose from becoming fatal. The focus on preventing overdoses is significant as we work to prevent substance use disorders and reduce harm in order to support the health and wellbeing of our community."

Prince William County Community Services will be offering a series of free REVIVE! training workshops to provide the knowledge and confidence needed to save a life during an opioid overdose emergency. Led by a qualified instructor from the Wellness and Prevention team, this 60-minute session offers a comprehensive understanding of overdose indicators. Attendees will learn the signs of overdose and how to effectively respond to an opioid overdose by administering Naloxone to potentially reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Following the training, attendees will receive free Naloxone nasal spray to ensure they are equipped to intervene in opioid overdoses.
