County Arborist Julie Flanagan was recently recognized by American Public Works Association (APWA) Mid-Atlantic Chapter for her work in making a stormwater management pond at Innovation Park into an improved, welcoming habitat for aquatic and avian wildlife.

The reforestation project, on about six of roughly 12 acres surrounding and including the pond, replaced non-native, invasive plants with a mixture of native plants including oaks, hickories and other forest trees to improve the habitat and increase wildlife diversity. The finished project includes a meadow, paths and a wildlife viewing platform.

The mission of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of APWA is to "advance professional excellence and public understanding through education, advocacy and community stewardship."
