March has been recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month since 1987. This is a time to recognize the efforts that have been made to work toward achieving a culture of meaningful inclusion of individuals with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life and to further commit to identify and remove barriers to inclusion for all Virginians.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, developmental disabilities are defined as impairments in physical, learning, language or behavior areas and include: Autism spectrum disorders, Cerebral palsy, Intellectual Disabilities and other developmental delays. One in seven children ages 3-17 have one or more developmental disabilities.

Recognizing the abilities and contributions of people with developmental disabilities enriches our community.

Community Services recognizes with appreciation all those dedicated to providing services in our community and supporting individuals, their families and caregivers with compassion and caring.
