Prince William County Sheriff Glendell Hill is pleased to announce the awarding of scholarships to nine local students on June 1, 2016. The presentation was held in partnership with the Prince William County School Board at the Kelly Leadership Center located in Manassas, VA. The awardees were recognized in front of the Prince William County School Board members, Superintendent Steven Walts, and residents of the county for their academic accomplishments and hard work. Sheriff Hill stated, "It is an honor to award these students with the Virginia Sheriff's Institute Scholarships, as one day soon these students will be future public safety officers… hopefully right here in Prince William County."
The $1,000.00 scholarships were provided by the Virginia Sheriffs' Institute (VSI) to assist students in their educational endeavors. The VSI scholarship program was established to afford an opportunity for young people across Virginia to pursue an education in criminal justice and is limited to students attending Virginia colleges and universities. The scholarship program is funded, in part, through the support of local citizens and businesses who become associate members of the VSI.
The Sheriff's Office works with local high schools guidance counselors to encourage students to apply for the program starting on February 1st each year. Students can reapply while they are in college, to continue receiving awards throughout their tenure. This year, VSI awarded 86 scholarships to young people across Virginia. Prince William County students was fortunate to receive 9 of those scholarships.
