The Crossing Guard Section is responsible for child safety and traffic direction at school crossings. This unit also conducts parking enforcement.
Periodically the unit seeks men and women who are interested in becoming School Crossing Guards. Crossing Guards are part-time positions only and they work during the school year.
Crossing Guard applicants must be available from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. (specific crossings may vary). Additionally, applicants:
must have a working vehicle, a valid driver's license and a working telephone
must have a good driving record
must NOT have a criminal record
must pass an employment physical that is provided through County government
must be able to comply with the Police Department's body art and facial hair regulations
must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or its equivalent.
In addition, Crossing Guards must be able to speak English well enough to understand instructions while training, effectively communicate with others, and be able to write down descriptions of vehicles and drivers when necessary.
The starting salary is $17.55/hour, three hours/day. Crossing Guards earn two hours annual leave and two hours sick leave per pay period. Uniforms are provided. Applicants must also pass the free Crossing Guard training provided by the Police Department’s Crossing Guard Unit.
