In 2017 the Board of County Supervisors approved the Pilot Archery Deer Management Program, which authorizes controlled deer hunting on specified County-owned properties. The Board took this action in order to maintain a healthy deer population in the county and to try to limit the number of automobile and deer collisions.
The Pilot Archery Deer Management Program will continue during 2018 and 2019, with controlled hunts scheduled from October 6, 2018 through November 16, 2018 and from December 2, 2018 through February 28, 2019on County-owned properties at the following locations:
- Andrew Leitch Park
- Ben Lomond Regional Park
- Cockpit Point Civil War Park
- Doves Landing Park
- Greenwood Farms
- Locust Shade Park
- Prince William County Landfill
- Rippon Lodge Historic Site
- Saratoga Hunt
The controlled hunts are limited to established archery hunt groups. Individual hunters not associated with a permitted group are not be allowed to participate. Hunters are required to complete safety courses prior to participation and must meet all Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries requirements. Firearms will not be used, and all archery hunting will be done from tree stands to limit the range of the hunters’ arrows. County staff will work closely with the organized hunt groups to monitor, and evaluate the success of, the hunts.
