It is critical in the application of the building codes to determine that a product complies with the technical requirements of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.
Products that are properly tested and labeled are approved for use (e.g. plumbing products with the proper ASTM Label; electrical equipment with the proper UL Label; fire rated doors with the proper manufacturer’s label).
Products that are not listed and labeled may be submitted for approval by the Prince William County Building Official. The product submittal must include one of the following:
- International Code Council Evaluation Service Report – The International Code Council Evaluation Service will review technical data to determine if a product complies with the International Codes and will issue a report. The report will give specific guidance to the local Building Official on the use and limitations of a product.
- Independent Laboratory Evaluation Report – An approved independent laboratory can be hired by a product manufacturer or the manufacturer’s agent to conduct standardized testing to determine the performance characteristics of a product and evaluate the product for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.
- Virginia Professional Engineer Evaluation Report – A Virginia Professional Engineer can be hired by a product manufacturer or the manufacturer’s agent to conduct standardized testing to determine the performance characteristics of a product and evaluate the product for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.
