Final Report Released for US Route 1/Quantico Area Planning Study

Thank you very much for your participation in the Planning/Preliminary Engineering Study of the Route 1 Corridor through MCB Quantico, Stafford County, and Prince William County. We are pleased to announce that the final planning and engineering report has been posted to the study website and is available for public review.  Your input and guidance has been invaluable in completing this study for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division (EFLHD) to plan future improvements.
The recommended alternative is a six-lane roadway for the entire length of the study area from Joplin Road/Fuller Road to Telegraph Road at Boswell’s Corner.  This alternative takes into account several considerations, including accommodations for transit, pedestrians, bicyclists and the environment.  The final alternative combines the traffic and operational needs of the forecast volumes and minimizes potential impacts to properties and environmental resources.
Next Steps:
The Route 1 Corridor Planning/Preliminary Engineering Study, with our recommendation, will now transition from FHWA to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for the balance of more detailed engineering design, environmental documentation, any needed right-of-way acquisition, and construction.
For the Telegraph Road Intersection Improvement Project, it is anticipated that a design-build contract will be awarded by mid-2013 allowing the project to proceed into final engineering and construction. Construction of intersection modifications are scheduled to be completed by mid 2014.

FHWA worked in coordination with the public and associated regulatory agencies to complete these studies on related, but independent schedules.  Continued cooperation will be needed between local jurisdictions, transportation agencies, military organizations, and local citizens in order to move toward implementation of this report’s recommendations.
