The Board of County Supervisors will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Bill Mehr Drop-In Center for the Homeless on Thursday, March 16, at 10:30 a.m. The Drop-In Center (DIC) is located at 14716 Potomac Mills Road in Woodbridge.

In December 2015, the Board of County Supervisors allocated $500,000 to renovate the county's existing Human Services Building and agreed to relocate the DIC to that location. The former DIC was in the same location as the Winter Shelter and limited the amount of potential services provided for persons who are homeless. It lacked private areas for training, confidential mental health counseling and one-on-one skills training for employment. The renovated facility now includes new classroom and training space, private counseling areas, an instructional, commercial kitchen, laundry and shower facilities.

The Prince William County Department of Social Services collaborates with the Cooperative Council of Ministries (CCoM) to operate the DIC for chronically, unsheltered homeless. Servants at Work, a committee of the CCoM, provides funding for staff, laundry and supplies for the operation of the DIC.

Bill Mehr lead the effort in opening the DIC. He died on April 25, 2010, and the DIC was renamed the Bill Mehr Drop-In Center after his dedicated service to persons who are homeless.
