The Prince William Social Services Prevention Team, community leaders and members of the community recently came together at the Dr. A. J. Ferlazzo Building to plant a garden of blue pinwheels as part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Phyllis Jennings-Holt, the county’s Social Services Adult and Child Protection Services Division Chief, said planting the pinwheel garden was a way to remind people to be aware of child abuse and neglect. “The purpose of the event is to bring community awareness and involvement in the area of child abuse and neglect.”
Jennings-Holt said the pinwheels signify the “innocence of childhood” and serve as a reminder to people to learn what they can do to help prevent child abuse, which can include physical harm, neglect, sexual abuse and emotional or mental maltreatment. The pinwheel is the new symbol for child abuse prevention.
National Child Abuse Prevention Month includes events where organizations from across the state, including the Prince William County Department of Social Services, partner with the Virginia Department of Social Services and Prevent Child Abuse Virginia and the Virginia Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention.
To report suspected child abuse, call the Prince William County Protective Services’ hotline at 703-792-4200, the Virginia Department of Social Services Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 800-552-7096 or visit the state child abuse prevention website.
