Calling all businesses! A group of local, state and federal agencies will hold a symposium on May 6 offering comprehensive workshops that will provide information on labor laws, current employment policies and the benefits of mediation. The event is sponsored by the Human Rights Commission and is free. It will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Dr. A.J. Ferlazzo Building, located at 15941 Donald Curtis Drive in Woodbridge. Registration is required.

This year's symposium, "Partnering with Businesses to Build the Best Employment Practices," will include the following workshops:

  • The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Division of Human Rights will conduct the Equal Employment Opportunity Policies workshop to provide training on how to prevent discrimination in the workplace. The training will teach employers how to implement best practices and impart knowledge on how to prepare for difficult human resources decisions.

  • The U.S. Citizens and Immigration Service will conduct the E-Verify workshop to provide training on current requirements for E-Verify compliance. E-Verify is a fast, free, online service that verifies potential employee's data against millions of government records and provides results within three to five seconds.

  • The Prince William County Human Rights Commission will conduct the Mediation workshop to discuss the benefits of mediation to both employers and employees. The workshop will also highlight the commission's mediation services that are available to businesses in Prince William County.

  • The U.S. Department of Labor will be at the seminar to answer questions on Wage and Hour Compliance, which will provide employers with the tools they need to comply with the variety of labor laws. The department will also provide information and resources to help employers and employees know their rights.
