Due to inclement weather, the Human Rights Commission postponed its celebration of Universal Human Rights Day.  The celebration will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2017, at 7 p.m. in the Board Chambers of the McCoart building.

The public is invited to attend the Universal Human Rights Day program this Saturday, Jan. 14, at 9 a.m. in the A J Ferlazzo Building Auditorium, 15941 Donald Curtis Drive in Woodbridge. The theme of the program is "Building Strong, Resilient, and Inclusive Communities." Mahalia Dryden-Mason, Fair Housing Training Specialist for the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) will be the keynote speaker and will talk about fair housing in Virginia.

The program includes breakfast and the annual presentation of the Human Rights Awards given to members of the community who provide unique contributions to human and civil rights. The 2016 winners are Dr. George Hampton, Maria Burgos, The Annie B Rose Missionary Society of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Carolyn Custard and Glorine Gholson, and the youth recipient is Norman Jones.

The United Nations declared Universal Human Rights Day on Dec. 10, 1948, to recognize the inherent dignity and equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family as the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.
