Neighborhood Services Division Helps Residents Maintain Neighborhoods

The goal of the Prince William County Neighborhood Services Division is to help county residents maintain the health, welfare and safety of their neighborhoods.

Neighborhood Coordinator Cathy Holtzlander said the division has a "wide variety" of procedures and services to help county residents with things such as illegally placed signs, roadside litter and neglected property. "We assist communities through property code and building maintenance enforcement. Our job is to help guide folks through the county process of what we can and can't do, and if we're not the right agency, we can get them to the right folks who can help them."

Property code enforcement means that the division can use county rules, regulations and ordinances to help neighborhoods deal with things like overcrowding, graffiti, outdoor clutter, tall grass and weeds, vacant homes, and abandoned or illegally parked vehicles.

Neighborhood Services also helps communities organize clean up events and will provide cleanup supplies such as bags and gloves and collect litter when the event is over. They can also assist neighborhoods with free dumpsters placed at central locations in different areas of the county during dumpster days, which are held in the spring and fall.

To help neighborhoods with issues they might face, the division holds a Neighborhood Conference each year. This year, the conference will be held on March 24, between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the county's Development Services Building, 5 County Complex Court. Workshops at the conference will include information on the county's property code, how property code enforcement helps neighborhoods and how homeowners associations can be successful, among other things.

Register online for the event. The fee is $25 per person, and space is limited to 100 people.
