Mike Broyles, of Manassas, said kits to etch your car windows are available online for $25, but he likes free better and having his windows etched with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) gives him a little more peace of mind. “Anything you can do certainly helps.”

Broyles and more than 50 other car owners recently brought their cars to the Shops @ Signal Hill shopping center in Manassas to have their windows etched through a program sponsored by the Prince William and Manassas Police Departments.
Police say etching vehicles is a fast, safe, simple and effective way to prevent auto theft. Thieves are deterred because disposing of chemically etched windows is time consuming and costly.
Prince William Police Officer Jason Alicie, who was on hand along with about eight others to etch the windows, said “Obviously, anything you can do to provide an extra layer of protection to your vehicle will certainly help.”
Luciana Vassos brought her car to be etched and said it made her feel a little bit safer. “It’s one less thing I have to worry about.”
The next etching event in Prince William County will be on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Manassas Mall.
The next closest event will be in Chantilly at the Fairfax County Police Department at 4900 Stonecroft Blvd. between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on May 31.
