Mystery Book Club
The Merlot Murders
by local author Ellen Crosby
Lucie Montgomery, an American ex-pat who has been holed
up in France for two years, returns to her family’s
vineyard in the Virginia countryside after the death of
her father in a supposed hunting accident. Once home,
Lucie discovers that the vineyard is collapsing under
huge debt; her brother, Eli, has turned into a
materialistic jerk; her little sister has taken up with
Lucie’s ex; and her
godfather, Fitz, has become a lush. When on the heels of
papa Montgomery’s funeral, Fitz is found
dead, Lucie’s suspicions are stoked. These deaths are no
accident, and suspects abound.

Middle School Book Club
Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George
Middle school students are invited to
embark on a reading adventure when a new
book club meets at Central Library on the
second Thursday of each month beginning
in September. Participants will choose the
name of this new club at the first meeting.
Ms. Paulette Garner, an 8th grade teacher
at Parkside Middle School, will guide the
discussions. The book to be discussed in
September is Julie of the Wolves by Jean
Craighead George. This is a story of a
thirteen-year-old girl who becomes lost
on the North Slope of Alaska as winter
approaches. Her only
chance at survival is
if she can convince a
wolf pack to “adopt” her.
Learn how Julie learns
to talk wolf through
sound, sight, posture,
scent and coloration
so that the pack will
accept her. Copies are
available at your local
public library. Come
and be a part of this new
venture!
For students in grades
6–8.

Science Fiction Book Discussion
Farthing by Jo Walton
This alternative history is set in 1949, eight years
after Britain agreed to peace with Nazi Germany, leaving
Hitler in control of the European continent. At the
country estate of
Farthing, a gathering of the power elite who brokered
the deal is thrown into turmoil when the main negotiator
is murdered, a yellow star pinned to his chest with a
dagger.
The author deftly alternates perspective between Lucy
Kahn, the host’s daughter, who has disgraced herself in
her family’s eyes by marrying a Jew, and Scotland Yard
Inspector Peter Carmichael, who quickly suspects that
the killer was not a Bolshevik terrorist.
Saturday, September 20, 2:30 p.m.
No registration is required.
