  Goal of Position: Do you want to learn more about personal finance and help others in the process? Be a volunteer educator and counselor! No special qualifications needed. We will train you to educate and counsel people who need information to plan their financial future, to get out of debt or to just learn the basics of personal finance. Trained educators must be available one or more Thursday nights per month over the course of one year. This is a minimum one year commitment.   Activities/ Responsibilities: Assist client in completing forms on assets, liabilities, and income and expenses; calculate debt ratios; build a spending and savings plan. Sessions run one to two hours on Thursday nights.

Services Benefits: Clients learn how to get out of debt, purchase a house, build wealth, plan for retirement, and begin estate planning. Quarterly in-service is devoted to topics of interest to volunteers. Virginia Tech and Virginia State University provide research based materials and resources.

Timeframe (Work Schedule): All Day Training is held two times per year, in May and again in September. Potential volunteers interested in attending training can request information and an application at 703-792-4765 or email SmartMoney@pwcgov.org. After training, volunteers first observe one or two sessions and then conduct a session with an experienced volunteer or staff member before working with clients solo. Assessment clinics start at 7 pm on Thursdays. Clinic sites alternate between Sudley North Government Center and the Ferlazzo Government Building.

Qualifications sought: Basic math and communication skills; ability to use a calculator.

Benefits: After completing the one year commitment, volunteers may elect to train to counsel a client long term or teach classes.
