Voting Equipment Logistics and Accuracy Testing Begins on Monday, January 4, 2016

Final testing of the Verity Scan voting machine equipment for the March 1, 2016, Primary Election will begin at 9:00 AM on Monday, January 4, 2016.  For additional information, please see the L & A Final Notice posted here.



Ballot order for Primaries 2016

December 16, 2015—The Virginia State Board of Elections (SBE) determined by random drawing the order in which candidates will appear on the ballots for the upcoming presidential primaries to be held in Virginia on March 1st.

On December 11, 2015, the Democratic Party of Virginia certified that the following 3 candidates qualified to appear on the 2016 Democratic Presidential Primary ballot. Following SBE’s random drawing today, the names will appear on the 2016 Democratic Presidential Primary ballot as:

  • Hillary Clinton
  • Martin O’Malley *
  • Bernie Sanders

On December 15, 2015, the Republican Party of Virginia certified that the following 13 candidates qualified to appear on the 2016 Republican Presidential Primary ballot. Following SBE’s random drawing today, the names will appear on the 2016 Republican Presidential Primary ballot as:

  • Marco Rubio
  • Lindsey Graham *
  • Ben Carson
  • Rand Paul *
  • Mike Huckabee *
  • Ted Cruz
  • Donald Trump
  • Jim Gilmore
  • Chris Christie *
  • Jeb Bush
  • Rick Santorum
  • John Kasich
  • Carly Fiorina *

* Campaigns have been suspended by the candidate.  They will still appear on the Presidential Preference Primary Ballot.


​Who may vote:

There is no voter registration by political party in Virginia. Any registered voter may vote in the Presidential Primary Election; however, no voter shall vote for the candidate of more than one political party. This means voter must choose to vote in only the Republican Presidential Primary or the Democratic Presidential Primary, but cannot vote in both.​

voters who are 17:

​Individuals who are 17 years old now, who will be 18 years old on November 8, 2016, may vote in the March 1, 2016, Presidential Primary as long as they register by the deadline Monday, February 8, 2016.​


Absentee voting begins Friday, January 15, 2016.

The last day to request a ballot to be mailed is Tuesday, February 23, 2016.

The last day to vote absentee in person is Saturday, February 27, 2016.​
