Housing Counseling is offered at no cost through the Financial Education Program of Virginia Cooperative Extension. Programs include:
 
Mortgage Default & Rent Delinquency

If you are behind on your rent or mortgage payments our one-on-one counseling will help you negotiate with  mortgage lenders or landlords. Although this program does not provide supplemental funds, we have successfully helped hundreds of families avoid eviction or foreclosure on their homes.

Counselors will return calls in the order received. Reverse Mortgage Counseling (Home Equity Conversion Mortgage)

If you are a senior citizen 62 years and older considering converting the equity in your home into income, our counselors will assist you in making an informed decision. Call 703-792-4713 to leave a message and a counselor will return your call.

Personal Finance

What is the state of your financial health? Get a free and confidential checkup to determine your cash flow, net worth and debt load.

Financial Assessment - the starting point of effective money management. Find our where the money goes, plan for significant life changes, learn to deal with debt and credit and develop a spending plan to manage your money. Meet one-on-one with a counselor to identify where your money goes and determine your cash flow, net worth and debt ratios. Given your goals, the counselor can provide information to help you manage your money and meet those goals. Continued counseling is available if needed.

Follow-up Counseling - available after the Financial Assessment. You may choose to work with a counselor for a few months to develop and implement a plan to meet your financial goals. This may include a review of your credit report or development of a plan to save for goals or pay down debt. To schedule an appointment for a Financial Assessment:                                                    

  1. Download the Assessment Forms and the Instructions. Give yourself one to two weeks to gather the data and complete the forms before the appointment.
  2.  Appointments are arranged for Thursdays at 7 p.m.
  3. From the Annual Schedule of Financial Classes select a preferred and a second choice clinic night date and location convenient to you. Make a note of the directions to the location. To get directions to County buildings click here or call 703-792-5800.
  4. To make the appointment e-mail your request or call 703-792-6287. Provide your name address phone number and your choices for an appointment. You may request the Assessment Forms and the Instructions be delivered to you by e-mail or U.S. mail.
  5. If you require an appointment for a day or evening other than Thursday night send an e-mail with your request or call 703-792-6287 to leave a message.
  6. We will contact you to verify that your appointment has been scheduled and provide you with instructions on how to verify that you will attend your appointment.

Please note:  If Prince William County closes government buildings due to inclement weather or other reason, appointments are automatically canceled.
