The Virginia Cooperative Extension Nutrition Education Program provides education to help families and individuals understand how to best manage their food resources, maintain personal health and reduce food related risks. In addition, educational resources are available to assist individuals and families in identifying local food resources, answering food handling concerns and understanding dietary needs. This service is offered to residents of Prince William County and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park by trained volunteers and Virginia Cooperative Extension staff.

Living Well with Diabetes/Pre-diabetes (2-3 sessions annually)19358388_ML.jpg

Living Well with Diabetes is a lifestyle management program where participants discuss behaviors that affect diabetes management and healthy eating. Topics include diet, exercise, stress and medications. There are four two-​hour classes and a follow-up class after three months. A hemoglobin A1c test is taken at the first class and at the follow-up session. There is a light meal at the beginning of each class and participants receive a notebook of information and recipes. The instructors include a Registered Dietitian, a Registered Nurse and a Certified Diabetes Educator. Spouses, friends or caregivers are encouraged to attend. There is a small fee to cover expenses. Classes are conducted in English and Spanish. Upcoming class information here. 

Nutrition Education for child care providers

This 2- day program, from 9:30 to 3:30 p.m., is designed for child care providers . The sessions include reading food labels, kid-friendly recipes, nutrition and behavior in children, gardening, arts and craft ideas and more. Next annual training​ date is Saturday, Aug. 22 & 29.  More information. 

Canning Classes and Pressure Cooker Testing

Learn about water- bath and pressure canning. Learn how to make jellies, jams, salsas and chutneys to give as gifts. Understand the basics of home food preservation and food safety. Each class meets from 9:30-2 p.m. and the cost of $20 includes, notebook and all ingredients to make and take two completed jars.  Information about sessions in July and August. SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SNAP) AND STRETCHING YOUR FOOD DOLLARS

Learn the basics of nutrition and meal preparation including meal planning and recipe ideas. Know how to eat well within your food budget and make your money and food stamps go further. Realize what you need to look for on the nutrition food label. Learn to make healthy choices and portions for the whole family. Find out about food storage and safe food handling. Set up a physical activity program for your family. This free program is offered to individuals and families of all ages who receive or qualify to receive food stamps, free or reduced school lunches, WIC or Department of Social Services assistance. Classes are conducted in English and Spanish in small group sessions.​
