The Affordable Care Act is the nation’s healthcare reform law enacted in March 2010. The law provides provisions for health insurance and stipulations for states seeking to expand. This page is intended to give you guidance on where you can go to find information regarding how the law may impact you and your access to Medicaid, FAMIS and/or health insurance.

  2. Has Virginia expanded Medicaid eligibility to new eligible groups?
    No, Virginia has not expanded Medicaid eligibility. Eligible groups remain the same in Virginia. To determine whether you may be eligible for Medicaid, please visit or call 1-855-242-8282.
  3. How do I apply for Medicaid or FAMIS benefits? 
    Individuals can apply online via CommonHelp at Individuals can also apply via mail, fax or in person. Most applicants who are ineligible for Medicaid or FAMIS will be sent to the Federal Health Insurance Marketplace. You may call 1-855-242-8282 to apply for Medicaid by telephone. Please note this number is to apply for Medicaid and FAMIS benefits only. Individuals cannot apply for other public benefits through this call center.
  4. How can I apply for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act if I do not have employer health insurance or if I choose not to use employer health insurance? 
    Individuals can begin comparing and purchasing health insurance in the Federal Health Insurance Marketplace by visiting, or calling 1-800-318-2596.
  5. How do I know I am dealing with a legitimate person or organization?
