The Prince William County Board of Social Services is an administrative board appointed by the Board of County Supervisors. Its emphasis is on policy and administrative issues. The Board consists of eight members, one for each Magisterial District of the County and one at-large member. The Board elects its Chairman and Vice-Chairman. Meetings are held the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in various locations within the County.
The Board of Social Services has the responsibility to:
Establish priorities and the 'mission' of the Board and the local department of social services
Administer social services programs in accordance with the law and State Board regulations. In matters not covered by the state policy, the Board may adopt policies applicable to the local department of social services
Appoint the local director
Make local policy decisions with staff input
Prepare and approve the budgets and reports to state and local officials; exercise discretionary power over local funding
Review program performance. Prepare performance evaluations of the Director of Social Services.
Employ legal counsel in civil matters
