Recycling at Home

Recycling helps conserve natural resources, save landfill space, conserve energy and reduce pollution. Recycle at the curb following guidelines provided by your trash/recycling hauler. You can also drop materials at one of the Recycling Trailers located throughout the County (sites are subject to change) or at the County's recycling collection centers at the PWC Landfill or Balls Ford Yard Waste Composting Facility.  Here is a handy guide to materials that can be recycled in our community.  Check out this recyclable items video for the latest additions to the growing recyclable items list.

For residents that live in an apartment or condominium, check with your property manager about recycling programs at your complex or use the recycling trailers.   If your complex does not have a recycling program, please call 703-792-4670 and we will work with the property manager to set up a program.

Acceptable Material:

Recycle at the curbside or at Recycling Trailers:

  • Plastics Containers:  1 through 7 narrow neck and wide mouth containers including soda, juice, milk, margarine/butter, yogurt, sour cream, cottage cheese, buckets, plant pots, etc.  Rinse out containers.  Bottle caps may be replaced after rinsing.  No hazardous materials (such as oil, flammable materials, chemicals, etc.).
  • Aluminum and steel food and beverage cans, empty aerosol cans and clean foil products and wrap.  Empty and rinse out cans.  Ball up clean foil.  Do not include foil products with food residue.
  • Aseptic milk and juice cartons.  Empty and rinse.

  • Glass bottles and jars - remove caps & rinse (not accepted: plate glass mirrors, light bulbs, ceramics, cookware, drinking glasses or chemical bottles).

  • Newspaper and mixed paper (any paper that tears) white/colored paper, magazines, catalogs, books, junk mail (even envelopes with clear windows) and paperboard boxes (e.g. cereal tissue etc.).  Do not include plastic bags included in newspapers.

  • Flattened cardboard and paperboard up to 2 ft. X 2 ft. in size.  Do not include cardboard with food residue or plastic liners. Not recyclable at trailer sites.

Materials recycled at the Recycling Trailers require that you:

  • Keep all paper items separate from food and beverage containers.
  • Secure paper or place in a paper bag.
  • Ensure paper is free of food.
  • Do not recycle waxed, foil or coated paper.
  • Recycle only paper that can be torn – no plastic coated items like overnight shipping envelopes.
  • Place shredded paper in a clear plastic bag.
  • Recycle large cardboard boxes at the PWC Landfill or the Balls Ford Yard Waste Composting Facility.

Yard waste can be also recycled at the PWC Landfill or the Balls Ford Yard Waste Composting Facility.
