Balls Ford Road Compost Facility

Prince William County residents are encouraged to bring yard waste, such as grass, leaves and small branches, to the Balls Ford Road Compost Facility (BFRC Facility).  The facility is located at 13000 Balls Ford Road in Manassas near the intersection of Balls Ford Road and Wellington Road.  You can contact the facility at 703-335-8181.
Hours are Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Holiday hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., except the facility is closed on New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.  Hours on Christmas Eve are 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Composting materials saves precious space at the landfill. Compost operations divert approximately 14 percent of the waste that would normally be sent to the landfill for disposal. Yard waste is composted into a useful soil amendment. This soil amendment helps enrich soil by adding nutrients and enhancing clay soils by creating spaces where air can flow through the clay.

Hit the Turf Running

A big play in reducing waste is to compost grass and leaves from your turf.  Yard waste makes up 13% of all the waste sent to our landfill.  We can make a huge difference by turning yard waste into useful compost to help our yards and gardens instead of tossing it out.  Score big when you compost!  View our videos on our main page to catch the team spirit!
Materials Accepted for Composting
Residents, refuse haulers, and commercial establishments may drop materials including leaves, grass, brush, logs (up to 24 inches in diameter and no more than four feet long), garden trimmings, and hedge trimmings. Yard waste can be delivered to this facility loose in plastic bags, or preferably in Kraft paper bags. At the PWC Landfill, leaves brought in plastic bags must be emptied, and the plastic bags should be disposed of as regular trash in the trash receptacle. Other yard waste materials may be accepted with prior approval.
Compost and Mulch Available for Purchase

Residents may purchase compost (sold by the cubic yard) at the Balls Ford Road facility and at the County landfill.  Mulch is also available for sale by the cubic yard at both locations, as is topsoil.  At each location, contractor staff will load products into residents' vehicles.  Call 703-542-4540 (ext.2) for prices and availability.  Prices for compost, mulch, and topsoil are subject to change by the contractor, Freestate Farms.
You can also compost at home
Trash Disposal & Recycling
The compost facility includes a Citizens’ Convenience Area for the collection of small amounts of household trash, recycling, bulky waste, and construction debris  (up to a full-sized 1/2 ton pick-up truck load only).
Household hazardous waste and electronics/computers are accepted on the second Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Balls Ford Road Compost Facility.
