Open House with FEMA

Learn Your Flood Risks if You Live Along the Tidal areas of the Potomac River

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is in the process of updating its floodplain maps for the tidal areas of the Potomac River.  Your property may be impacted.
The Department of Public Works, along with FEMA and the Virginia National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Coordinator, will sponsor an open house to provide you with more information and help you reduce your risk.  You will be given the opportunity to review the newly updated flood maps, known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps.  County and FEMA representatives will answer your questions about the updated maps, the mapping process, flood risk and flood insurance.
The Open House is scheduled for Thursday, May 15, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Development Services Building, 5 County Complex Court in Woodbridge, VA 22192.
Residents will be able to locate their property on large updated maps.  Once you find your property, you can talk with the flood hazard mapping team and flood insurance specialists about your property, options and needs.  You can also review the maps prior to the meeting at, but it is important for you to attend the meeting to discuss your specific property and needs with FEMA staff.
Flooding is the number one natural disaster in Virginia.  It is important for you, as a property owner,  to understand the risk and take advantage of tools and programs available to you, including flood insurance.  This can help reduce your flooding impacts.  The County participates in programs sponsored by NFIP so that flood insurance is available to the community.
We encourage your participation and ask that you stop by at your convenience on May 15th between 5 and 8 p.m.  Staff members, including Spanish-speaking interpreters, will be on hand to guide you through the process. We are committed to ensure that the meeting and materials are accessible to all, and so in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (, reasonable accommodations are available upon request.
