The In-Service Training Catalog provides updated information to law enforcement personnel from the Prince William County Police Department and the Prince William County Sheriff's Office.

Other law enforcement agency personnel may register for classes when space is available, but no more than 30 days in advance of the requested class.
 
Firearms training is open to local law enforcement officers. For specific eligibility, contact the Firearms Range Manager at 703-792-5050.

Information About Incident Command System Courses 
 

All Officers must take ICS 100 and ICS 700. All Sergeants must complete ICS 200. These three classes are available online.

All First Sergeants and above must complete ICS 300 (available only in the classroom). All Captains and above must complete ICS 800.

No Department registration is required for the online courses. Please submit your certificates upon successful completion of these courses.

Fentanyl: Drug Trends, Investigations & Officer Safety

This two-day training course will help law enforcement officers understand what Fentanyl is. Day one focuses on breaking down this most dangerous and challenging drug as well as the latest trends in packaging and distribution. An emphasis will be placed on how to protect yourself from accidental exposure. Day two will focus on investigative techniques involving this class of drugs. Crisis Intervention Team Training

This 40-hour core CIT course is designed to educate and prepare personnel, who come into contact with people suffering from mental illnesses, on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of these illnesses and to respond effectively and appropriately to individuals in crisis.

The Roadside Interview to Success

This one-day course will provide students with an arsenal of methods and skills to use during the traffic stop to uncover potential criminal activity while engaged in traffic enforcement. This course reflects a variety of interview and interrogation situations officers face on a daily basis and will help police officers prepare for real-life encounters. ERD Operator Certification Course--FULL!

An average of 10 ERD operators are permitted per squad. SWAT Team members do not count in your squad operator numbers due to their own re-certification schedule. Officers must bring their duty belt and patrol vest with them to training.

Advanced Pro-active Patrol--FULL!

This class covers advanced patrol techniques that will provide an officer assigned to Patrol with the tools to detect, investigate and make pro-active arrests. Instructors will provide a classroom presentation that covers case law, learned/developed techniques, current drug information and reviews of PWCPD cases. Scenario-based training will also be used to provide hands-on training, as well as the opportunity to attempt these techniques with support/advice from SIB detectives.

Knock & Talk Investigation Techniques

This one-day course provides in-depth information, and proper techniques and tactics, for officers to conduct knock & talk operations. When conducted properly, this can be a successful tactic to combat illegal narcotic trafficking. Officers will be presented with material to clearly define when knock & talks are within the strictures of the Fourth Amendment. Crime Scene Technician Course--FULL!

This two-week course provides basic instruction on the systematic approach to crime-scene processing; scene identification and security; crime-scene documentation through the use of photographs, notes and sketches; evidence recognition; proper evidence collection, packaging and preservation techniques; and evidence submission for scientific examination. Instruction will include both classroom discussion and hands-on exercises, culminating in a critiqued investigation of a mock crime scene.

Speed Measurement Device Operator Course

*NEW* General Instructor Development Course

This 40-hour course is the first step in becoming a DCJS-certified General Instructor. The course introduces students to the fundamentals of course design, basic facilitation skills, and techniques to manage a classroom. Students MUST attend every hour of this course to meet DCJS requirements.

Due to limited seating and great demand, the Academy Director will make the final selection of those accepted to attend the course. Interested members must submit a memorandum to the Chief of Police which should include the following information:

  • Reason/need for instructor certification;
  • Understanding that you will be asked to instruct future mandatory training, and your supervisors are willing to allow you to assist;
  • An understanding that you will meet the DCJS requirements to become an instructor and maintain certification within the allotted time.

**Note to supervisors: In addition to the submission of the memorandum, please email Officer J.T. McCauley requesting enrollment. Officer McCauley will submit the enrollment roster to the Academy Director. The Director will make the final decision on the approved roster using the enrollment roster, submitted/approved memoranda from the Chief's Office, and Departmental training needs.
