How to Report a Crime

Prince William County 911 Call Center Operator speaking to a citizen on a headset  To report a crime:

Emergencies, dial 9-1-1
For non-emergencies, dial 703-792-6500

Anyone may report a crime, or seek other police services, by calling the Police Department or by appearing in person at one of the police substations. The Police Department will take all appropriate actions for the reported situation. High-priority matters, such as emergencies, require that officers be immediately dispatched to take appropriate action.

For other situations, immediate response may not be necessary or appropriate. Such calls will be held until the officer assigned to that area is available to respond. In other specific cases the Communications Center may refer a call to the Telephone Reporting Unit (Tele-Serv).

The Police Department encourages everyone to report any crime or suspicious activity that they observe.

Any time you call the Police Department you will be asked for your name, address and telephone number. The reason for this request is in case additional information is needed from you regarding the situation or your observations. If you choose, you may request to remain anonymous and the police will still check on the situation and your concerns.

The person who takes your call will need to know what happened, where and when, and if anyone is injured. Other helpful information includes the names and/or descriptions of any persons involved and a description of any vehicle,s such as make, model, color, license number and state.

Be alert and observant! Information you provide can help solve a crime.
