How do we acquire our dogs?
The K9 Unit supervisors travel to vendors along the East Coast, who sell dogs to police departments across the country. These dogs come from Europe, primarily Germany, Belgium and Holland, but also from other nations in both Eastern and Western Europe.
The dogs we purchase should be around 18 months old, and they are usually males (because they tend to have fewer health problems). The dogs are extensively tested by our K9 Unit's trainer before being purchased. We primarily look for two attributes in the dogs we acquire: retrieve (prey) and defensive (fight) drives.
Once the dog is acquired, it is paired with a handler and, together, they enter into a 16-week basic K9 school.
