Dog Training Classes

PWC Animal Shelter PWC Animal Control PWC Animal Shelter PWC Animal Control PWC Animal Shelter

We now offer several free, American Kennel Club (AKC) dog training classes, including S.T.A.R. Puppy, Canine Good Citizen and Canine Good Citizen Community and Agility courses.

Offering these classes helps the Animal Control Bureau protect public health and safety, educate the public about responsible pet ownership, and give adoptable animals a second chance at a forever home.

Help your adopted Shelter dog -- or other dog -- become a valued member of the community. These courses are provided free of charge to Prince William County residents, and they educate owners to be responsible for their dog's health needs, safety and quality of life. The courses also teach owners and their dogs how to not infringe on the rights of others.

The Animal Shelter offers the courses on Tuesdays and Thursdays. See the brochure for specific information on each class.

During these trainings, dogs do not interact with other dogs unless the owners agree.

A few rules to be followed:

  • You must bring proof of current rabies vaccination

  • No Flex/retractable leads

  • Please use a flat, slip or Martingale collar (no gentle leaders/head halters)

  • One dog per handler

  • Bring plenty of treats

  • Bring water for yourself and your pup

  • Wear sneakers or other comfortable shoes. No open-toed shoes, or heels, since we do a one mile walk

  • Class starts promptly at 10 a.m.

Class will be canceled if there is a 50% or higher chance of rain.

*The AKC Canine Good Citizen program provides an excellent foundation for training and other fun activities, and results in a well-mannered dog who is a joy to live with. Some therapy-dog groups require passing the Canine Good Citizen test as a prerequisite; some insurance companies recommend Canine Good Citizen training; and an increasing number of apartment and condo complexes are requiring this training.
