Responsibilities of the Public Information Office
The Prince William County Police Department is responsible for, and dedicated to, keeping the community informed about crime and other police-related events that occur in the county. The Public Information Office serves as the direct link between the Prince William County community and the Police Department through coordination with local media and by using multimedia platforms. These vital tools assist the department in providing timely and accurate information to the public.
One of the responsibilities of the Public Information Office is to compile a daily incident report which is posted on this website every week day, Monday through Friday (with the exception of some holidays). The Public Information Office is also responsible for all external department communications which include news releases of department events and awards, as well as, community partnering events. The Public Information Office is also tasked with managing and updating the Department's website and social media pages: Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

News Media Notice
The Prince William County Police Department's Public Information Office strives to be as responsive as possible and to act in the best interest of our agency, the news media and the residents of Prince William County. Routine inquires and other information requests are handled during normal business hours. During post-business hours, weekends and major holidays, a Public Information Office staff member is always on-call for emergencies or significant breaking news events. The on-call member will generally not have information regarding routine arrests or incidents or have information about cases being jointly investigated with other agencies.
On-call members should only be contacted in incidents of high importance as outlined above. Please note, that because the on-call Public Information Officer changes periodically, news outlets should call the Prince William County Public Safety Communications Center at (703) 792-6500 and request the contact information of the on-call member.
The Public Information Office maintains an email distribution list for breaking news and other police related advisories. In order to be added to this distribution list, the media outlet needs to be credentialed by either the Virginia Association of Broadcasters or the Virginia Press Association and must provide proof to the Public Information Office staff.

FOIA requests which pertain to the retrieval of documents or records are processed by the Internal Affairs Office of the Prince William Police Department. These requests can be submitted to the department in person, by mail or in email form. FOIA requests will be accepted by the department from any citizen of the Commonwealth of Virginia, any representative of print media with a publication in the state and any representative of television or radio media broadcasting in or into the state.
FOIA requests should be as detailed as reasonably possible and outline the specific information and/or records you are seeking to obtain. The department is not required to make a new record in response to any FOIA request. Requests in written or email form will be accepted and forwarded for processing when received Monday through Friday (except holidays) during normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Please note that there are requirements which are necessary in order to submit a request and that certain records which may be exempt under VA FOIA. A link to the Virginia Freedom of Information Act is provided above which provides additional information on these exemptions and requirements. The department is also allowed to charge a reasonable cost associated with VA FOIA requests and the payment may be required before the request is fulfilled.
