Graffiti: Law Enforcement Issues
Graffiti is more than a law enforcement issue; it is a community maintenance issue. The County's Public Works Department's Neighborhood Services
Office can help residents and business owners deal with it.
When the Police Department investigates graffiti complaints:
- A report is taken by a patrol officer, including photographs of the graffiti.
- Detectives analyze this data and, where necessary, work cooperatively with neighboring law enforcement agencies to apprehend offenders.
- If the graffiti is determined to be related to gang activity -- and not all graffiti is gang-related -- then the report is reviewed by the Department's Gang Unit and appropriate follow-up is conducted by unit detectives.
