The Prince William County Community Alert Network (PWCAN) is a free text-based service that sends electronic notices alerts and information to subscribed users regarding general emergencies weather and traffic. Anyone who has an e-mail account or a mobile phone or pager that can receive alpha-numeric messages can use PWCAN.

The Prince William County Police Department also uses a telephone-based service called A Child is Missing (ACIM) Alert Program which is primarily used for missing persons of all ages but is also used to notify residents in the event of other natural or man-made emergencies. ACIM sends immediate voice messages to all listed numbers that are registered with the telephone company.
