Dangers of Pellet Guns

Do not be misinformed that pellet guns are harmless toys!
With muzzle velocities surpassing 1,000 feet-per-second in some models, pellet guns are capable of seriously injuring or killing a human being. Did you know that a shooter can be charged with Aggravated Malicious Wounding -- a Class 2 felony? Generally a person convicted of such a crime can be imprisoned for 20 years to life, and the offender may be subject to a fine of up to $10,0000.

Adults and children should be aware of the following:
  • Air guns air rifles BB guns and pellet guns that expel any kind of projectile by means of compressed air or gas cartridges can be considered firearms. Additional weapons laws may apply to these types of guns.

It is also important to remember that:
  • Playing with so-called 'toy' guns could make it easier for your child to mistakenly regard a real gun as a 'toy.'
  • Parents often underestimate the potential for injury from BB and pellet guns unless their child has been wounded by one.
  • Police officers may mistake a 'toy' gun in your child's hand for a real gun. 'Toy' guns should not look like real guns; they should be brightly colored.
