County Employee of the Month -- March 2013
FIRST SERGEANT SHAWN M. PEAK
First Sergeant Shawn M. Peak, a Police Department patrol supervisor in the Western District, was selected as Prince William County Government’s Employee of the Month for March 2013. He was nominated by Lorraine Eckhardt, M.S.W., a Supportive Services Specialist with the Prince William Area Agency on Aging.
First Sergeant Peak responded to an early morning call from a resident about a death that had occurred and the elderly, severely memory-impaired spouse who needed assistance. The couple had no children and no family in the area, and it was evident that the spouse could not be left alone. First Sergeant Peak contacted several County agencies, including Adult Protective Services and the Agency on Aging, to obtain assistance for the spouse and ensure that she remained safe.
As these agencies found permanent placement for the spouse that day, it was learned that she would need a chest X-ray at a local hospital before she could be admitted. First Sergeant Peak, who had remained with the spouse, was the only one on scene who could transport her and he did, remaining with the woman until late that evening. When the charge nurse informed him that the woman’s potassium levels were low, First Sergeant Peak obtained a meal for her. He made copies of all the necessary forms for her new permanent home in the event the faxed paperwork was misplaced, and followed up with County employees the next day to ensure the woman’s safety and comfort.
“First Sergeant Peak respected the citizen’s dignity and used creativity to provide support and kindness, and serve with excellence,” Lorraine wrote in her nomination. For this, he truly deserves the Employee of the Month Award for March 2013.
