Family History Library (FHL) Microfilm Service

Obtaining Microfilm from Salt Lake City

RELIC is pleased to provide access to millions of rolls of microfilm containing worldwide genealogical and historical records, which have been filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Family History Library, operated by the Church in Salt Lake City, is the largest genealogical library in the world. Bull Run Regional Library in Manassas is the only branch of the Prince William Public Library System that is designated as a Family History Center (FHC) so all FHL films must be viewed at Bull Run Regional Library. We have four microfilm reader/printers. The cost of printed copies is 15 cents each. You may also choose to scan microfilm images and save them to a flash (thumb) drive at no cost. Many people enjoy our long hours so they will have plenty of time to view their films.

Any patron can place and pay for microfilm and microfiche orders from any computer by using a credit card or PayPal account. After the patron has created his or her account, he or she can order microfilm(s) on loan and have them shipped to their local Family History Center.

To access the Online Microfilm Ordering site, individuals will need to use their FamilySearch account. If a person does not have a FamilySearch account they will need to register, at no charge. Creating an account allows individuals to order microfilm or microfiche.

Remember to select Bull Run Regional Library as your FHC.

The life cycle of an order begins by searching for a microfilm or microfiche to order. Then you add the film to your cart and complete the checkout process to pay for the film. Once your order has been placed, the order is put in a processing queue. This queue gives you 24 hours to cancel the order. After 24 hours, the order is sent to Distribution. If the film is available, it will be shipped to your Family History Center (FHC) and you will receive an email from the Family History Library notifying you of the shipment. If the film is not immediately available, it will be placed on backorder and the Family History Library will send you an email notification. Once the microfilm has been received at the Bull Run Regional Library, you will be notified by email that the film has arrived and is ready for you to view. Seven days before the film needs to be returned, the Family History Library will email you a renewal notification. At that time, you can either renew the film for an additional sixty days or have the film returned.

Film charges as of April 2012:
Short-term: $7.50
Long-term: $18.75 (Indefinite loan)
Microfiche: $4.75 (Indefinite loan)
