Donating Used Books, Audiobooks, Music CDs and DVDs
to the Prince William Public Library System
The Prince William Public Library System accepts donations of current books, audiobooks, music CDs and DVDs that are in good condition. Some items may be added to the collection. Any donations that are not added to the Library System's collection are given to the Friends of the Library and sold through annual and ongoing book sales.
Listed below are the guidelines for what the Library System will add to its collection. Although the Library System no longer accepts items such as audiocassettes or videocassettes, these items can be donated and will be redirected to the Friends of the Library for their sales.
The Library System adds to its collection:
Items in good condition
Current titles of interest as well as some classic fiction
Non-fiction titles less than 3 years old
Titles that specialize in Virginia history
The Library System does not add to its collection:
Encyclopedia sets
Magazines
Textbooks
Condensed books, such as Reader's Digest Condensed Books
Abridged audiobooks
Books that are stained or mildewed, or have damaged or torn pages
Books that have handwriting or highlighting on their pages
Scratched or worn music CDs or DVDs
Videos in VHS format
Music CDs with explicit lyrics
DVDs that are R rated
Video games
Computer software

What will the Friends of the Library accept for its book sales?
Generally, the Friends of the Library accept donations of clean, undamaged books, magazines, audiobooks, videocassettes, DVDs, records and cassettes, and computer software. The Friends will also accept textbooks not older than 5 years, complete encyclopedia sets not older than 10 years, reference books not older than 10 years unless they are collectibles, and computer books not older than 5 years. Please check with the Friends of the Library for additional information.
What other organizations accept donations of used books and other media?
The following organizations also accept donations of used materials (as of June 2008). Agencies request that individuals call to check that they are still accepting donations prior to stopping by with materials.
