Ribbon Cutting for Prince William County Parkway

The mission of the Department of Transportation is to consistently improve the transportation network and meet the needs of our growing community.

Our goals include easing the flow of traffic and improving travel within Prince William County; providing transportation options for residents and visitors and creating and maintaining safe traveling conditions.

In order to meet these goals, we work with a wide variety of local, regional, state and federal partners. In addition, we manage Capital Improvement Projects and work with the Board of County Supervisors to find effective solutions that resolve transportation issues.

About Transportation Services

Transportation is an important issue for the residents of Prince William County. The Department of Transportation coordinates local, regional, and state efforts to improve the ways we get around. Our engineers work to implement measures that protect drivers and pedestrians.

The Department of Transportation encourages the community to share ideas and concerns about road and transportation issues in Prince William County. To arrange a visit our office or to receive additional information, email Transportation@pwcgov.org.

Transportation Planning

Transportation planners manage, develop, and update the transportation element of the County Comprehensive Plan. Planners serve on various committees to represent the needs and goals of the community. Click here for a list of regional, state and national transportation partners.

Road Projects

Construction of new roads and road improvements are handled by the Prince William Department of Transportation and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) .

Transportation & Roadway Improvement Program

Small-scale projects receive funding from the County's Transportation & Roadway Improvement Program (TRIP). This program is conducted under the TRIP Program Guidelines.

Commuting and Commuter Parking Lots

To help our citizens improve their commutes the Department of Transportation encourages drivers to consider carpooling and ridesharing. The Potomac Rappahannock Transportation Commission and Virginia Railway Express offer a variety of commuting options, such as local and commuter bus and rail service. These options strive to improve the speed and convenience of travel.

Road Maintenance

VDOT provides all road maintenance in the County, including snow removal. VDOT fills potholes and repaves roads, clears drainage ditches along the roads, services storm drain outlets, and mows along roadsides and on medians. Contact VDOT by calling 1-800-367-7623.

Site Development Issues

Site inspectors work with developers to ensure that new roads meet all requirements to be accepted into the State roadway system for maintenance and snow removal. Site inspectors also make certain that driveways are constructed correctly.

Traffic Signals and Traffic Control Signs

VDOT maintains traffic signals and traffic control signs. VDOT determines the timing of traffic signals based on traffic volume and commuter needs.
