Congratulations Lieutenant Dave Cooper
You have been selected as the Fire and Rescue Department's Team Member of the Month for September 2013.
The Fire Marshal's Office has been utilizing an old small metal bunker to store potentially hazardous evidence. The bunker is located next to the Manassas office building in the middle of downtown Manassas. Not only did the bunker not meet the needs of the organization, but the location did not meet the requirements of the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code.
On your own accord, you initiated contact with Tom Ashbaugh, a blasting supervisor with William A. Hazel, to inquire about a large underutilized explosive bunker that you saw at one of their locations. After explaining the needs of our office, you were able to secure the bunker as a donation to the County.
Next, you identified a secure location for the bunker at the Public Safety Training Center (PSTC) that met all of the requirements of the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code. The site required preparation to include grading and vehicle access which you arranged. You relocated the bunker from its previous location at William A. Hazel to the PSTC. After its arrival, you brought your own tools from home and designed, built and installed shelves necessary to organize submitted evidence. Additionally, you installed the hazardous materials placards and painted the exterior with a silver metallic paint to reflect the sun and minimize the internal temperatures of the bunker.
Your committment to the improvement of the organization significantly enhanced the resources of FMO allowing the Department to better preserve and protect critical evidence and saved the County over $10,000.
Your actions exemplify the County and Department's visions and values with your efforts being emblematic of the Department's unity and ultimate performance values, and the County's vision of excellence and creativity of finding better ways to do the right thing for the customer and community every time. Thank you for your hard work and dedication.
