Power Outages -- Are You Prepared
For Release
February 12, 2014
With anticipation of the upcoming heavy and wet snow storm, power outages are likely to occur and will affect many in our area.  If your power goes out, are you prepared until it is restored?  Rappahannock Power suggests the following tips in preparing for a power outage:

  • Assemble an emergency storm kit containing:
    • Flashlights and fresh batteries.
      • NEVER use candles.
    • Battery-powered radio or TV and extra batteries.
    • Land-line phone with cord (cordless phones require electricity).
    • Battery-powered or windup alarm clock.
    • Supply of bottled water (one gallon per person per day).
    • Non-perishable foods that require no heating.
    • Blankets, bedding or sleeping bags.
    • First-aid kit and prescription medications.
    • Hand-operated can opener.
    • Special items for infants, the elderly or family members with special needs.
    • A variety of hand tools.
    • List of emergency phone numbers.
    • Identification and copies of important family documents in a waterproof container.
    • Cash (ATM's may be unavailable).
  • Develop and practice an emergency plan with everyone in your household.
  • If your water supply depends on electricity, i.e. electric pump, fill your bathtub with water.
  • Make sure your cell phones are charged.
