Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue proudly announces the graduation of its inaugural West Point Leadership Course class.  The graduating class consists of 15 Captains and Lieutenants from Prince William and Fairfax Country.

Graduates from the Prince William Department of Fire and Rescue include Captain Tom Clark, Tracey LaBass, Chip Morrison, Jason Reese, and Rob Smith as well as Lieutenant Andrew Jeremiah, Patrick McClelland, Dustin Miner, Mike Mohr, Marcus Saager, Ron Saikowski, Tom Trochan, and Andy Pagano.

Graduates from the Fairfax Country Fire and Rescue Department include Captain I Brian Edmonston and Mike Sease.

Leadership training for Fire and Rescue personnel in Prince William County has flourished under the vision and hard work of many department personnel in conjunction with John Halstead, a former leadership instructor and course director at the United States Military Academy.

The graduates are the first to graduate from the West Point Leadership Course entirely adapted to address fire and rescue issues.  The 16-week program focuses on enhancing a leader’s knowledge of individual motivation, group processes, leadership styles and skills, organizational theory as well as honing leadership problem-solving skills in a values-based, ethical manner.

In addition to the academic portions of this course, which earns course participants college credit, there was an emphasis on the practical application of course principles to fire and rescue situations.  “We start with topic specific information so participants understand the concepts for each lesson and then we translate the information into action which is what leaders and leadership are all about,” said Mr. Halstead, the primary instructor for the course.  “We also focus on incorporating the values of the fire and rescue profession into everything these fire and rescue leaders do in class.”

The West Point Leadership Course originated from the undergraduate leadership course taught to all Cadets at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY.  In the early 1990s, the West Point approach to training leaders was revised by the Military Academy faculty in conjunction with two police agencies for use in the public safety world.  Subsequently, many public safety agencies have adapted this program for their specific use as is the case with the current Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue’s leadership course.
