Avoid Disaster Scams

Often in the aftermath of inclement weather many homes and properties are severely damaged and in need of repairs. Follow these helpful tips prior to having work completed on your home and property:
  • Ask for a business card and verify that the contractor has a street address not a P.O. box.
  • Verify that the contractor is licensed and insured to do business in your area by contacting the Better Business Bureau or local consumer protection agency.
  • Work with local contractors whenever possible and ask them to provide at least three local references for similar work in the area.
  • Be cautious about offers that require immediate action. Insist on a written estimate that spells out all fees and taxes and never sign a contract that is not completely filled in.
  • Shop around and compare prices. Try to get at least three bids.
  • Don't make a final payment until the job is completed and has been inspected to meet any existing codes.
  • Pay by check or credit card to ensure you have a way to track the payment.
  • Get a written guarantee that specifies what is covered and for how long.
