Plantation Culture From Those That Built It: A View of Slavery Through Architecture and Art

7 p.m.; Free, but donations to support Prince William County historic preservation efforts are appreciated.

Join nationally renowned historian Dr. John Michael Vlach as he explains the culture and life of slaves through their places of work and rest. There are very few depictions of slaves in 19th century plantation images and there are even fewer remaining examples of the buildings in which they spent their everyday lives. Through stories and images, Dr. Vlach will bring a different view of life on a plantation from the perspective of the people that gave plantations their power — the slaves. Dr. Vlach is a Professor of American Studies and Anthropology at the George Washington University and Director of the university's Folk life Program. He has also authored two books on plantation and slave life: Back of the Big House and The Planter’s Prospect.

7 p.m.; Free, but donations to support Prince William County historic preservation efforts are appreciated.

On July 18, 1861, two very green armies clashed at Blackburn’s Ford beginning the 1st Manassas Campaign. Each army had at least one soldier who held a closely guarded secret — their gender. On the Union side, Sarah Emma Edmonds fought using the male alias Franklin Thompson. On the Confederate side, Loretta Velazquez led Louisiana Troops as Lieutenant Harry Buford. These two “Patriots in Disguise” would find themselves on opposing sides of conflict. In honor of National Women’s Month, join historian Joyce Henry as we explore the unique contributions made by these and many other women during the Civil War.
