Who Are We?

The Prince William County Committee for Persons with Disabilities (PWC CFPD) was established in 1987 as an advisory group to the Board of County Supervisors (BOCS) on disability issues. Its primary purpose is to recommend to the BOCS ways and means by which the County may be more responsive to the needs of citizens with disabilities. In 1992, the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS) designated local Disability Services Board (DSB). CFPD was designated to serve as the Prince William County Disability Board. CFPD consists of eight representatives appointed by the supervisor from each district, one local official, two business representatives and a DRS representative.

Where do we meet?

Committee meetings are held the 1st Tuesday of each month.
Place:
Development Services Building, Room 107A/B
5 County Complex Court
Prince William, VA 22191
The meetings are open to the public, and citizen input on disability issues is welcome.

Needs Assessment Survey Information

Needs Assessment  Report

The Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS) conducts a needs survey every three years to identify the needs of those with disabilities in Virginia.  The data from this survey is presented to local and state officials to inform them of the unmet needs of those with disabilities. In the last needs assessment (2003), medical and dental services, transportation and housing were among the top needs in Prince William County. For a summary of the 2003 Needs Assessment Report, see the link below. For a copy of the full report, call 703-792-7649 or e-mail lmoore@pwcgov.org or click: Tri-Annual 2006 Needs Assessment Report.

Advocacy Issues

Advocacy Issues - January 2008

Public Awareness

The Committee is constantly trying to promote public awareness of the unique problems which people with disabilities must deal with on a daily basis.

Kids on the Block is an international communications program that uses puppets to depict disabled and non-disabled persons teaching children to accept and appreciate the differences among us. The puppet characters talk about issues such as what it is like to be blind or to use a wheelchair.  If you are interested in having the Kids on the Block perform for your school or organization, call 703-792-7649.

If you are interested in helping us create disability awareness and tear down barriers, contact us. There may be a vacancy on the Committee for your district, or some other way in which you may be able to volunteer. Thank you for your interest.

If you know of a business, large or small, which you consider 'disability friendly' we want to hear about it. The Committee is seeking nominations for the Virginia Disability Friendly Business Recognition Seal. Do you know of a business that values people with disabilities as employees and customers? Nominate a business on one of the following criteria: accessibility, customer friendly or business friendly. Call 703-792-7649.

Disaster Readiness for People with Disabilities

The Committee for Persons with Disabilities, serving as Prince William County Disability Services Board, heard a special presentation on Disaster Readiness for People with Disabilities by Patrick Collins, Emergency Services Coordinator, Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue. See the documents below for information on how to prepare in the event of a disaster. Rehabilitative Services Incentive Fund (RSIF) The Prince William County Committee for Persons with Disabilities (CFPD) is seeking projects to submit to the Rehabilitative Services Incentive Fund (RSIF). These funds are awarded, not to individuals, but to programs demonstrating an innovative approach to serving the needs of residents in Prince William County with physical and/or sensory disabilities.

This year there is $180,000 available statewide for FY08. These funds will be competitive with each DSB submitting one proposal not to exceed $15,000. A guiding principle for awarding RSIF funds depends on the project’s ability to respond to the 2006 needs assessment survey. All RSIF proposals will be scored on the Needs Assessment Report, with the highest score being recommended for approval.

Applications, guidelines, needs assessment report and a criteria evaluation form are attached below. This application is also available in additional formats, including Braille, upon request by calling 703-792-7649, e-mailing lmoore@pwcgov.org.
