The Historic Preservation Division hosts a variety of events to introduce the community to Prince William County's rich historic and cultural past. Events are held at four historic properties: Rippon Lodge, Ben Lomond Historic Site, Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre and the Old Manassas Courthouse. These events allow visitors to explore and discover the families, homes, events and the everyday life of Prince William past. We hope you will join us for a step back in time! Please note that the sites close for the season on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009 at 4 p.m. Grounds and trails at Brentsville Courthouse Historic Center and Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park remain open daily from sunrise to sunset. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009 They Indeed are a Very Useful Corps: American Riflemen in the Revolutionary War Historic Preservation Division Lecture Series 7 p.m. at Old Manassas Courthouse, 9248 Lee Ave., Manassas, VA 20110 FREE ADMISSION Local historian, teacher and author Michael Cecere will explore the important role that American riflemen played in the Revolutionary War. Visit Prince William County’s last standing one-room school dedicated to the education of African-American children in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Recently reconstructed in 2007, the one-room school served local African-American children from 1885 to 1926. Mosby. Mosby’s many exploits took place throughout Northern Virginia and Prince William County. Mr. Goetz will present an encompassing look at Mosby’s life and some of his most famous adventures. In April of 1861, residents of Prince William County met in Brentsville and voted to endorse Virginia’s secession from the United States. That same month, several military units were formed in Brentsville to prepare for the defense of Virginia. Join Civil War living historians to learn about the formation of these units and how they were mustered, trained and drilled. Learn about how Prince William County’s civilians dealt with the harsh reality of war at the Haislip Farm House. Stuart’s December 1862 cavalry raid behind Federal lines into Prince William and Fairfax Counties. Space is limited, reservations required. Prince William County, formed in 1731, has a rich colonial heritage that still exists today. Visit several sites that highlight the people and events of the colonial period. Tour with local historians to see sites in such places as Occoquan, Woodbridge and Dumfries. Saturday, June 13, 2009 Rose Garden Tours at Ben Lomond 12 – 3:30 p.m. Manassas, VA 20109 $5 per person Take a guided tour of the recently restored rose garden. Tours will focus on ongoing restoration efforts, antique rose varieties, and companion plantings. Basic horticulture practices will be discussed. Ben Lomond House will be open for tours. Monday – Thursday, July 6 – 9, 2009 Civil War Days Camp at Ben Lomond (for ages 8 -13) 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., Ben Lomond Historic Site, 10321 Sudley Manor Drive, Manassas, VA 20109 $90 per child. Space is limited, reservations required. Kids will have a great time recreating a camp site, preparing authentic rations, drilling with wooden muskets and finding out how the soldiers spent their free time.
