The Historic Preservation Division hosts a variety of events to introduce the community to Prince William County's rich historic and cultural past. Events are held at four historic properties: Rippon Lodge, Ben Lomond Historic Site, Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre and the Old Manassas Courthouse. These events allow visitors to explore and discover the families, homes, events and the everyday life of Prince William past. We hope you will join us for a step back in time!   

Please note that the sites close for the season on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009 at 4 p.m.  Grounds and trails at Brentsville Courthouse Historic Center and Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park remain open daily from sunrise to sunset. The sites will open for the special events noted below during the winter months.

They Indeed are a Very Useful Corps: American Riflemen in the Revolutionary War

Local historian, teacher and author Michael Cecere will explore the important role that American riflemen played in the Revolutionary War. Many of these riflemen, including their commander Daniel Morgan, hailed from Virginia, and played a crucial role in winning the Revolutionary War. Call 703-257-5243 for more information.

Visit Prince William County’s last standing one-room school dedicated to the education of African-American children in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Recently reconstructed in 2007, the one-room school served local African-American children from 1885 to 1926. Through tours and exhibits, visitors can learn the history of post-Civil War African-American education in Prince William County and northern Virginia. Dangerfield Newby
Historian Dr. Philip Schwarz will lecture on the dramatic account of Dangerfield and Harriet Newby. This touching story highlights the sad effects slavery had on African-American families and Dangerfield’s desperate attempts to free his wife which led to his prominent role in John Brown’s Harpers Ferry Raid in 1859. The Life and Times of John Singleton Mosby

Historian David Goetz will lecture on the famous Confederate partisan raider, John S. Mosby. Mosby’s many exploits took place throughout Northern Virginia and Prince William County. Prince William Prepares for War

Soldier Recruiting

In April of 1861, residents of Prince William County met in Brentsville and voted to endorse Virginia’s secession from the United States. That same month, several military units were formed in Brentsville to prepare for the defense of Virginia. Join Civil War living historians to learn about the formation of these units and how they were mustered, trained and drilled. Learn about how Prince William County’s civilians dealt with the harsh reality of war at the Haislip Farm House. Civil War encampment with drills and demonstrations offered periodically throughout the day with the camps open for tours in the evening. Call 703-365-7895 for more information.

J.E.B. Stuart’s 1862 Christmas Raid

Local historian and lecturer Mark Trbovich will discuss Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart’s December 1862 cavalry raid behind Federal lines into Prince William and Fairfax Counties. Colonial Prince William County Van Tour

Prince William County, formed in 1731, has a rich colonial heritage that still exists today. Visit several sites that highlight the people and events of the colonial period. Tour with local historians to see sites in such places as Occoquan, Woodbridge and Dumfries.

Civil War Days Camp at Ben Lomond (for ages 8 -13)

9 a.m. – 12 p.m., Ben Lomond Historic Site, 10321 Sudley Manor Drive, Manassas, VA 20109 $90 per child. Space is limited, reservations required.

Kids will have a great time recreating a camp site, preparing authentic rations, drilling with wooden muskets and finding out how the soldiers spent their free time. There will also be a live fire demonstration. Camp is offered in conjunction with the Ben Lomond Community Center. Call the Ben Lomond Community Center at 703-361-7126 for reservations.

Anniversary of the Battle of First Manassas at Ben Lomond

Beyond the Battlefields: The Civil War in Prince William County Van Tour

King’s Highway Special Tours

Journey along the historic King’s Highway, also known as the Potomac Path. Generals George Washington and Rochambeau used this stage and post road to move their troops to Yorktown in 1781.
