Youth Services  




 
 

Youth Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services are provided through five New Horizons programs. Program staff provides a range of mental health treatment, substance abuse treatment, co-occurring disorders treatment and prevention services to youth who are age 18 or younger and their families. Program staffs assess youth and families for the least restrictive treatment options. Services include an array of outpatient treatment options, therapeutic services at the Juvenile Detention Center, referrals to residential treatment, discharge planning from psychiatric hospital and residential facilities, and prevention services for at-risk youth.

Teens in the New Horizon Program

New Horizons Clinic-Based Services provides outpatient therapeutic services for youth and their families with mental health, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders as well as family issues. Services include:

  • mental health and substance abuse evaluations, including court-ordered evaluations
  • individual, family and group therapy, generally conducted once/week
  • case management to link clients with needed community supports
  • collaboration with probation officers, social workers, school staff, other professionals and other community resources
  • crisis intervention
  • skill building (i.e., anger management, parenting, impulse control, limit setting, positive communication)
  • referrals to mental health, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders residential treatment programs
  • medication evaluation and management
  • discharge planning from psychiatric hospital and residential programs
  • participate on Family Assessment and Planning Teams (FAPT) and provide FAPT case management
  • intensive care coordination for youth on probation in FAPT-funded residential placements to facilitate a safe, timely return to the community

New Horizons Home-Based Services provides intensive outpatient therapeutic services for youth and their families with mental health, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders when the youth is at high risk for an out-of-home placement. Services include:

  • intensive individual and family therapy, generally conducted several times per week in the client home, school and other community locations
  • case management to link clients with needed community services and supports
  • collaboration with probation officers, social workers, school staff, other professionals and other community resources
  • crisis intervention
  • skill building (i.e., anger management, parenting, impulse control, limit setting, positive communication)
  • referrals to mental health, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders residential treatment programs
  • discharge planning from psychiatric hospital and residential programs

New Horizons Juvenile Detention Center Services provides a range of therapeutic services to youth detainees on site at the Juvenile Detention Center to address issues related to mental health, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Services include:

  • mental health and substance abuse evaluations, including court-ordered evaluations
  • individual, family and group therapy
  • crisis intervention
  • case management to link clients with needed community services and supports so the detainee can safely return to the family and community
  • collaboration and consultation with JDC staff, parents, probation officers, social workers, school staff, other professionals and other community resources
  • skill building to improve problem solving skills, teamwork and positive communication
  • random urinalysis in conjunction with JDC staff and probation officers
  • referrals to mental health, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders residential treatment programs
  • discharge planning from psychiatric hospitals

New Horizons Prevention Services provides an array of services related to youth at risk for mental health, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Services are provided in schools, agencies and other community locations and include:

  • presentations for youth, parents, professionals and other community groups
  • consultation on designing, developing and implementing substance abuse and/or mental health prevention activities for youth, families, schools, coalitions and other community groups
  • cultural diversity training and presentations for youth, parents, professionals and other community groups
  • student support groups for at risk youth
  • summer programs for youth
  • staff development training and consultation on substance abuse, mental health and co-occurring disorders as well as cultural diversity and other related topics

New Horizons School-Based Services provides a range of therapeutic services to students on site at area public high schools to address their own or family substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders. Services include:

  • substance abuse and mental health evaluations, including court-ordered evaluations
  • individual and group therapy
  • case management to link students and families with needed community services and supports
  • collaboration with school staff, parents, probation officers, social workers, other professionals and other community resources
  • crisis intervention for emergencies at school related to substance abuse and co-occurring disorders
  • critical incident debriefings for school-related deaths and other critical incidents
  • presentations and trainings on substance abuse and related issues for students, parents and professionals
  • reentry services for students returning from substance abuse and co-occurring disorders residential programs
