Do you need a new Solid Waste Disposal Residential User Decal for access to the Landfill?

Prince William County (PWC) residents and businesses can bring their trash to the Prince William County Sanitary Landfill at no charge; however, this trash must have been generated in PWC. For residents of the towns of Dumfries, Occoquan, Haymarket or Quantico, charges are applicable as shown on Page 10 of the Landfill Rules. If you attempt to bring trash from other places, there are penalties. You must bring proof of your County address when you come to the PWC Landfill. Weekends are usually very busy, and you may have a long wait between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. We suggest that you visit during the week so that you will not have to wait in line.

Use of the Solid Waste facilities is limited to residents of, and commercial establishments doing business in, Prince William County, the towns of Dumfries, Occoquan, Haymarket or Quantico and refuse removers having a valid refuse permit issued by the Department of Public Works. Proof of residency is required. Solid Waste Disposal Residential Decal, personal property tax receipt, real estate tax receipt or valid Virginia motor vehicle operator's license may be used as proof of residency.

The landfill offers:

  1. A full-service trash disposal area
  2. Recycling services
  3. A place to drop-off used motor oil, anti-freeze, and car batteries
  4. Yard waste disposal area and the processing and sale of mulch, compost and topsoil
  5. Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling drop off every Wednesday and Saturday year-round from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  6. The Too Good To Waste Place is open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Landfill Compost Processing AreaMulch, Topsoil and Compost Available for Purchase
Residents may purchase mulch, compost and topsoil at this facility. It is sold in two different portions, approximately 1.5 cubic yards for a small pickup truckload or approximately two cubic yards for a full-size pickup truckload loaded into vehicles by onsite staff. Sale of topsoil is subject to availability. Prices for compost, mulch, and topsoil are subject to change by the contractor, Eastern Clearing, Inc. without prior notice. For larger deliveries, call Eastern Clearing, Inc. directly at 540-439-4163.

Tires - Up to four (4) tires (no commercial truck or oversized tires) are accepted from residents at no charge. For more than four tires there is a charge of $1.00 per tire. Loads of more than 10 tires will be weighed and charged the appropriate per ton fee. Businesses must pay for disposal of all tires. See Page 11 of the Landfill Rules or call the Landfill at 703-792-5750 for more information.

Construction and Demolition Debris (C&D) - The Department of Public Works reminds businesses and contractors that large amounts of C&D from projects are not accepted at PWC Landfill. Contractors may drop off small amounts of C&D up to (½ ton) a regular-size pickup truck (2.5 cubic yards) load for $25.00. Payment can be made by cash (no bills larger than $20), credit card or check. Please call 703-792-5750 to inquire about where to dispose of large amounts of construction and demolition debris. Violations carry penalties and fines.

PWC residents may dispose of small amounts of C&D up to a regular-size pickup at no charge from home improvement projects that they undertake, but the PWC Landfill does not accept material in trucks larger than one half (½) ton. The County prohibits C&D at the landfill because it is bulky and takes up a large amount of space. There are debris landfills that are designed and operated to handle this type of material. By restricting construction debris, the County can save valuable space for future municipal disposal needs. The Solid Waste Fee does not include disposal of large amounts of construction and demolition debris.

A Builder's Guide to Reuse & Recycling has been published by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG). This guide also contains information about why you should recycle, the basics of C&D recovery, tips for job site collection, etc. Businesses and contractors may also consult the Internet or phone book for a list of C&D disposal facilities in the area.

The PWC Landfill does not accept regulated medical waste, radioactive material, ammunition, or asbestos. Call 703-792-5750 for information on disposal of these materials. You may also contact the Prince William Health Department/Virginia Department of Health or the Department of Environmental Quality or other sources on the Internet.

Cover Your Load - One of the main sources of litter on roadsides comes from trash blown from vehicles on the way to a disposal site. It is not only dangerous, it is illegal to transport unsecured and/or uncovered loads of debris.

The Prince William County Code (Chapter 22 Refuse § 22-145) requires any person transporting refuse to do so with a vehicle equipped with a secured cover to prevent the escape of refuse while in transit. People who fail to cover their loads are subject to fines. Therefore, please be sure to secure or cover your waste before you drive down the road.
