The Telegraph Road Phase II Project is complete and officially open. Members of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, to open the $6.5-million lot, which offers direct access to the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes through the existing Horner Road Commuter lot.
The project improvements include: expanding Telegraph Road from a two-lane to four-lane divided, urban roadway with a 16-foot-wide median, a 5-foot sidewalk and 10 -foot wide shared use path along the sides of Telegraph Road to serve the Park and Ride lot; adding a new traffic signal at the entrance of the Park and Ride lot and Telegraph Road; and completing traffic signal modification at the intersection of Telegraph Road and Caton Hill Road. The completion of the project also added 176 new spaces to the 553 existing spaces included in Phase I, which was completed in August 2012, as well as street lighting and crosswalks.
Prince William Supervisor Mike May, whose Occoquan District includes the Telegraph Road area, said the project would improve commuters’ quality of life. “Helping residents get around more efficiently, and in a more quick and safe manner, is important to the Board of County Supervisors and is part of our long-range transportation planning. This lot is going to help commuters, drivers and pedestrians.”
Prince William Chairman Corey A. Stewart said the Park and Ride lot means a lot to commuters. “To the average person this is a very, very big deal.”
Prince William Supervisor Martin E. Nohe, Coles District Supervisor and chair of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, said the park-and-ride lot fits into regional plans for better transportation options. “Really, in many ways, this is a county-wide project. People throughout Prince William County are going to benefit from this. This kind of investment in things that we do to encourage ride sharing, to increase the use of transit, are really going to be very important at the regional level.”
Funding for this project came from local funds, proffers, the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration.
