The Historic Preservation Division hosts a variety of events to introduce the community to Prince William County's rich historic and cultural past. Events are held at four historic properties: Rippon Lodge, Ben Lomond Historic Site, Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre and the Old Manassas Courthouse. These events allow visitors to explore and discover the families, homes, events and the everyday life of Prince William past. We hope you will join us for a step back in time!   

Please note that the sites closed for the season and opened again in May 2010. Grounds and trails at Brentsville Courthouse Historic Center and Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park remain open daily from sunrise to sunset. The sites will open for the special events noted below during the winter months.

23-24   Ghost Hunting 101

28   *Always Ready: The United States Marine Corps Involvement at Harpers Ferry

7 p.m.; FREE, donations appreciated

On Oct. 16, 1859 raiders struck the United States weapons arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Led by abolitionist John Brown, the raiders intended to capture the weapons stored there and use the guns to incite a slave rebellion in the South. United States Marines from the Washington Barracks and nearby Naval Yard were called upon to put down this insurrection. Join us as Gunnery Sgt. Thomas E. Williams of the United States Marine Corp Historical Company takes us back to Oct. 16, 1859 and gives an overview of the events of that day from the perspective of the Marines sent to put down Brown’s plan. Gunny Williams will also speak briefly about forthcoming exhibitions at the National Museum of the U.S. Marine Corps here in Prince William County.

Lucasville School Weekend Tours

Saturdays and Sundays: 6 & 7; 13 & 14; 20 & 21; 27 & 28

12 - 4 p.m.; FREE

Visit Prince William County’s last standing one-room school dedicated to the education of African-American children in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Reconstructed in 2007, the one-room school served local African-American children from 1885 to 1926. Through tours and exhibits, visitors can learn the history of post-Civil War African-American education in Prince William County and northern Virginia.

6    Girl Scout Try It   

1 - 5 p.m., $16

Area Girl Scouts aged 7-13 are invited to participate in this history-based educational program. Girls will learn about local history and have opportunities to speak with living historians who portray 19th-century people. Program cosponsored by the Ben Lomond Community Center.

11   The Birth of Virginia’s Aristocracy

7 p.m.; FREE, donations appreciated

Author and noted historian James Thompson will highlight events and individuals connected with the birth of Virginia's aristocracy, a process that began in 1620 and ended in 1700. The discussion will be animated with a fascinating collection of illustrations and portraits of the scoundrels and heroes who carried the process forward including Thomas, 2nd Lord Culpeper, Col. Richard Lee and Thomas, 5th Lord Fairfax. Signed copies of Thompson’s new book, The Birth of Virginia’s Aristocracy, will be for sale.

25   *The Underground Railroad in Northern Virginia

7 p.m.; FREE, donations appreciated

Historian Deborah Lee, Ph.D. will speak about the Underground Railroad in Northern Virginia, specifically sites along the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area. Dr. Lee will highlight people and places that showed how many in the region resisted slavery or assisted others in their escape to freedom. Dr. Lee recently authored; Honoring Their Paths: African-American Contributions along the Journey Through Hallowed Ground, which highlights 300 years of African-American contributions to American history along the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area.

25   * If They Build It, Supplies Will Come – The Centreville Railroad and Its Importance During the American Civil War

7 p.m.; FREE, donations appreciated

Local historian Art Candenquist takes us back to the early days of the American Civil War when Prince William County found itself in the front lines of the conflict. He will discuss the creation and usage of the Confederate Centreville Railroad, the first military railroad in US history. This railroad was used to send supplies from Manassas Junction to the troops in the Centreville area and was crucial to them in the winter of 1861.

Join Prince William County's Historic Preservation Staff in our continued efforts to restore the Bristoe Station Battlefield. Come dressed to get dirty as we remove invasive plants, plant native species, and maintain the trails. Wear sturdy work shoes and bring gloves, sunscreen and insect repellent. Tools will be provided. Join the staff at Bristoe Station Battlefield, the Civil War Preservation Trust and the History Channel for Park Day 2010. Park Day is a nationwide event that encourages Civil War enthusiasts to help maintain, restore and preserve Civil War sites through volunteerism. Come out and join us for a fun and rewarding day of work at Bristoe Battlefield. We will work on grounds maintenance projects throughout the 133-acre site. Enjoy a guided tour of the gardens and landscape of Rippon Lodge. A special exhibit will showcase images of the gardens during the early 20th century, when Judge Wade Hampton and Dessie Ellis undertook their Colonial Revival restoration of the house and grounds.

Historian, author and lecturer Ron Coddington will discuss photography and its role in capturing images of common soldiers who fought for the Union or the Confederacy. Mr. Coddington has written Faces of the Civil War: An Album of Union Soldiers and Their Stories and Faces of the Civil War: An Album of Southern Soldiers and Their Stories. He will have copies of his recently published scholarly works available for sale and autographing at the conclusion of his presentation.

1     Prince William County Historic Sites Open for the 2010 Season

Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre, Ben Lomond Historic Site and Rippon Lodge Historic Site open Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Site admission fees apply. 

 

1-2   * Prince William Prepares for War – Brentsville Civil War Weekend

11 a.m. - 5 p.m.; $5.00, free for children under six

In April 1861, residents of Prince William County met in Brentsville and voted to endorse Virginia’s secession from the United States. That same month, several military units were formed in Brentsville to prepare for the defense of Virginia. Join Civil War living historians to learn about the formation of these units and how they were mustered, trained and drilled. Visit the Haislip Farm House to discover how Prince William County’s civilians dealt with the harsh reality of war. A Civil War encampment will be open for visitors with infantry, cavalry and artillery drills and demonstrations offered periodically throughout the day.

Take a stroll and identify the different varieties of native and introduced trees and plants that grow  throughout the forty acres at Rippon Lodge Historic Site. Learn the uses of some plant species highlighted during the tour. Locate several historic trees dating to the early history of the property. Please come dressed for a moderate outdoor experience. A picnic facility is available for those who choose to bring a lunch. Please, no pets.

8   * Potomac Blockade Boat Tour

10a.m. – 6 p.m.; $100 per person; reservations required

Cruise along the Potomac River shoreline and view sites that were critical to the Confederate forces’ successful blockade of Washington D.C. from September 1861 through March 1862. Local historians will discuss the significance of the Blockade and of the gun batteries and camps that supported the Confederate efforts. The cruise will include the preserved batteries at Freestone Point and Possum Nose, as well as Evansport and Shipping Point. Lunch is included.

15   * In the Footsteps of the Gray Ghost: Col. John S. Mosby Van Tour

8 a.m. - 5 p.m., $80 per person, space is limited, reservations required

Join Mosby expert and tour guide David Goetz for an in-depth tour of the places and events of famous Confederate partisan raider, Col. John S. Mosby. Mosby was known for his lightening raids and secretive missions during the Civil War. The tour will cover several locations in “Mosby’s Confederacy”, an area in western Prince William, Loudoun and Fauquier Counties that Mosby used as his base of operations. Cost includes lunch and admission to rarely-visited sites.

This camp will include activities associated with the various periods of history at Brentsville.  Children will conduct a historic mock trial in the 1822 Courthouse, cook a snack and create historic crafts in the ca.1850 Haislip Farm House, learn about a school day in the one-room schoolhouse and engage with nature as they identify animals and plants along the Brentsville Nature Trail.

21-22   * “Hard Tack and Coffee” Brentsville Civil War Soldier Camp

150 years ago, Prince William County citizens came to Brentsville to learn how to be soldiers. These farmers, shopkeepers and laborers brought few skills that would prepare them for life in the army. Step into the past and discover the military and daily life skills of Civil War soldiers. Activities of this overnight intensive camp include military drill, firing demonstrations, camp life, cooking and building a soldier hut. Meals are included.

Children will participate in activities built on fundamentals that they learned during the Basic Civil War Summer Camp (see July 19-22). Participants will drill their peers, learn an artillery drill, explore non commissioned officers’ administrative responsibilities, spend a day with Confederate General Robert E. Lee and take a field trip to Manassas National Battlefield Park. Participants MUST have attended the Basic Civil War Summer Camp.

20   Open Hearth Cooking Class at Brentsville

Gear up for the Thanksgiving season by learning the skills of open hearth cooking. Join an experienced open hearth cooking historian and learn the basic skills needed to prepare food over an open fire. You will learn how to build a fire and will prepare and cook three different dishes. End the program by enjoying a taste of the food you cooked. Class will take place in the ca. 1850 Haislip Farmhouse.

In December 1862 Artist Thomas Nast drew one of the earliest images of Santa Claus giving gifts to soldiers. Santa will dust off that old suit he wore then and visit Ben Lomond. See the house decorated in true Victorian style by the Prince William County Garden Council and make period decorations to take home.
